What makes a material a composite?

The material has been used in military applications for the Swedish Navy since the late 1960’s when the material development. The goal was to create a material with superior performance compared to traditional construction materials used by the military.

Extensive R&D was carried out and the new material and technology were tested under extreme conditions. Test-ships were constructed and tested under military conditions and the results were outstanding. Kockums Shipyard has for the last 35 years built a large number of mine-sweepers and corvettes for the Swedish Navy; all still in operation and in perfect condition with no signs of ageing of the composite material and it is virtually maintenance free.
